Hey everyone,
I have had an acquaintance ask me today about online safety- and was wondering if anyone has experience with this. The problem is she is taking on a new job soon, and does not want her name to show up in google searches etc.
Do you ask your employer in those cases? (which would feel odd I imagine if you are a new employee) Do you report it to google but that seems like such an impossible task since they will probably say to contact the website that put your details online...
I bet there must be thousands out there who had the same question. Any experienced are welcome!

Ok so once I had that thought - I did a little self experiment and within 4 hours had two newspaper's AND google remove my name from older entries which revealed my location. I had told them I am concerned about my safety and it was a DV case. I was not immediately successful but kindly asked for a manager and explained my situation in a sincere way.
Now this was just a test as I haven't heard from, or been stalked by my abusive ex in many, many years-- but for anyone out there wondering about having their ex abuser find them, please know newspapers, courts, and google etc. are on your side and can help- it seems they know a lot about this...and...like I figured, I was NOT the only one requesting this. I was treated very fairly and served quickly, and must say I hope others who want to remove online content about their whereabouts feels the same way, and do not give up until things have been removed.
Anything to stay safe.

Thanks for doing that experiment janine. I think it is worth keeping this thread at the top for a while to see whether other people have experience or suggestions for online safety. I have noticed that Facebook will often show exactly where someone is if they have added anything by mobile. I don't have a mobile advanced enough to surf the web or anything, but I imagine there is a way of disabling the location bit?

Yes there is, you are very right Lindsey! I was glad to see with a little bit of perseverance I got the pages removed within hours--something I have been wondering for years and never got to. I will also now ask my employer to see what they do to show awareness of the serious situation of DV survivors who are still being stalked. Luckily many abusers move on (sadly to new victims) but at least many survivors can move on without being paranoid about the internet as well. And IF you are concerned about your safety, it seems at least in my case there is a way to have it removed. (I admit I threatened legal consequences since my 'safety had been compromised' and that made them react super fast)- so don't be shy if it is about something serious. Not everyone understands DV and some need a little gentle push ...
